Senior Residents
Post graduates from the specialties of Anaesthesiology,
Chest Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics are eligible for the
post of senior resident in the department.
Over a dozen Senior Residents work on 1:4 and 1:5 roster
to look after the patients along with the faculty. At any given time,
atleast two senior residents are available in the ICU.
Nurses
Around 35 dedicated and highly experienced nurses look
after the nursing care of the patients admitted in the ICU.
Other supporting staff
A physiotherapist, a social worker and a dietician are
available to help the ICU team to look after the patients. A two member
departmental office staff assists the functioning of the department.
Clinical Services
Clinical Services
- The clinical services are provided through a closed ICU
with the following
- A 12 bedded general purpose ICU (planned to
expand to 25 beds) for adult and pediatric patients
- 24 hour presence of residents at the bedside and
faculty cover
- Bedside bronchoscopy
- Bedside echocardiography
- Continuous renal replacement therapy at the bedside
- Bedside percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy
- The departmental out-reach services to the wards
include
- Assessment, advice and transfer of sick patients to the
ICU.
- Airway assessment and management
- Placement of central venous lines
- Advice regarding parenteral nutrition of patients
- A follow up clinic is running in the department every
Friday to ensure follow up of the patients discharged from the ICU.
Teaching, training and education
A. Structured courses approved by the Institute
- Post doctoral certificate course in Critical Care
Medicine of one year duration
- Post diploma certificate course in Critical Care
Nursing of one year duration
The admission to these courses is through an entrance
examination. Eligibility criteria are same as for the post of senior
resident.
B. Short term observership
Candidates, irrespective of their current affiliation and
background specialty, can take 1-3 months observership in this
department. Eligibility criteria are same as for the post of senior
resident. The fee structure is as per the Institute’s rules.
C. Training of sponsored candidates
The department accepts sponsored candidates for short (1-3
months) or long term (1-2 years) training from the all kind of public
sector undertakings like Provincial Medical Services Doctors and Armed
Forces Medical Services Doctors.
Short term trainees are given the Certificate of
Observership while long-term trainees receive Certificate of Training.
Long-term trainees work as full time Senior Residents. Eligibility
criteria are same as for the post of senior resident. The fee structure
is as per the Institute’s rules.
D. Future courses
Three year DM course in Critical Care Medicine is likely
to take off in the near future.
Pediatric services and training
Dr. Banani has a special interest in the intensive care of
pediatric patients. The ICU is fully capable of handling children
and adolescents who are critically ill.
Residents from a pediatric background are welcome to apply
for senior residency and/or PDCC. The learning opportunities are
enormous.
