Introduction of Emergency Medicine(EM)
EM is medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of unforeseen illness or injury. Initial evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and disposition of any patient requiring expeditious medical, surgical, or psychiatric care are part of EM.(American College of Emergency Physician,USA)
EM is a field of practice based on the knowledge and skills required for the prevention, diagnosis and management of the acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical and behavioural disorders (College of Emergency Medicine,UK).
The other synonyms of EM are Emergency Room(ER)/ Emergency Department (ED). The doctor who is specialist in EM is called Emergency Physician (EP).The Emergency Physician is expert to identify and timely manage all type of medical and surgical emergencies and acute medicine.

•    Medical Council of India had recognised in 2009it as a speciality, to start MD Degree Program in Emergency Medicine in India.

•    Diplomat National Board recognised as aspeciality in 2013 to start three years DNB program in India.

-    Paediatric emergency medicine
-    Medical toxicology
-    Wilderness medicine ( EM in isolated & rural areas)
-    Emergency medical services (EMS)
-    Prehospital care system & ambulances
-    EM Research
-    Trauma care (Initial management & coordination)
-    Observational medicine (Continued EM care of critical patients not admitted to ICU)
-    Undersea & Hyperbaric medicine
-    Aerospace medicine & air evacuation
-    International EM (Establishing EM departs in third world )

Other responsibilities of ED/ Emergency Physician
•    Administration, research and teaching of Emergency care.
•    Follow up care (observation medicine)
•    Provision for emergency care to hospital patient on request.
•    EMS and pre hospital care
•    Disaster planning and management (both natural and manmade events)
•    Toxicology and poisons center development
•    Education of Healthcare providers and the common public
•    Preventive care medicine
•    Basic and clinical research especially in resuscitation and acute care.
