Department of Pulmonary Medicine


    Department of Pulmonary Medicine was established under Pradhanmantri Shwasth Sewa Yojna (PMSSY) by the 59th Governing body of the institute on 12th June 2006 with the vision to impart quality services for professional excellence and commitment for sustainable development in the field of pulmonary diseases.Recruitment of its first faculty member in July 2009 led the department to start providing its clinical services and indoor servicesto the patient. In a very short span the department started accepting wide referral from the whole of eastern UP, adjoining Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Nepal with patients of common and rare respiratory disorder. In the silver jubilee year (2013) of the institute the department was bestowed with two new faculties to establish a young and dynamic team with similar clinical and academic background.Over the years the department has steadily grown and emerged as one of the leading speciality center of the region providing excellence in clinical, interventional, academic and research activities.

 Department of pulmonary medicine has a strength of FOURTEEN senior resident with two residents dedicated to pediatrics pulmonology.

Services
1.    Outpatient Services
The department’s OPD services with all faculties and residents are available onWednesday, Friday and Saturday for new, referred and follow up patients. More than 10,000 patients receive OPD services every year. Old patients are seen only on prior appointment basis.
The department is running dedicated clinic for interstitial lung disease on Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 pm with prior appointment 
Dedicated lung cancer clinic is scheduled to start from 1st January 2016 on Monday 9:00 to 12: 00 am

2.    Inpatient Services
The department has pulmonary wards with 12 general beds, 2 private rooms and 2 isolation room well equipped to provide basic medical care
The department has well equipped 10 respiratory ICU beds to provide advanced medical care with dedicated strength of residents, nursing and paramedical staff.

3.    Laboratory services
A well-equipped pulmonary function testing unit with basic spirometry, lung volumes and resistance and lung diffusion facility is currently available. A cardio-pulmonary exercise testing for various cardiac and respiratory diseases will be functional soon. More than 400 PFT is being performed monthly in the PFT lab with an aim to provide same day service.

4.    Interventional pulmonology services
Department is one of the leading centers for interventional pulmonology services providing basic diagnostic and therapeutic video-bronchoscopy right from the inception of the department.Advanced interventional services provided by the department are:
a)    Medical thoracoscopy:
Semi-rigid and rigid thoracoscopic services are used for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for patients suffering from pleural diseases like pleural effusion, pneumothorax, hemothorax etc.

b)    Rigid bronchoscopy:
Committed service for diagnostic and therapeutic intervention in patients with central airway obstruction, massive hemoptysis, tracheo-esophageal fistula and lung cancer

c)    Tracheo-bronchial stenting:
Stenting facilities (metallic and silicon stents) under general anaesthesia are provided for various benign and malignant disorders of the tracheo-bronchial tree in a dedicated operation theater every Thursday.

d)    Endobronchial Ultrasound:Services for rapid sampling of mediastinal lymph nodes under direct ultra-sonographic vision are started recently.

e)    Airway intervention: Other airway interventional services like argon plasma coagulation, electrocautery, cryotherapy and laser therapy will be introduced in the immediate future.

5.    Sleep laboratory services
Department is successfully performing state of the art polysomnography for patients with snoring, sleep apneas and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Both diagnostic and therapeutic titration of the non-invasive ventilation is provided.   

6.    Academic services
Weekly journal club and seminar are currently undertaken in the morning. Teaching of senior resident is routinely taken by the faculty at the bedside during ward and ICU round.
