Blood Processing
Laboratory
This laboratory accepts requests for blood and
blood products for patients from the Institute's hospital as well as those
from King George's Medical College, Command Hospital, Balrampur Hospital
and Civil Hospital in Lucknow. The facility is licensed by the Drugs Controller
of India.
Activities of this laboratory include:
Donor blood processing: Tests
for determining the ABO group & Rh type, detecting unexpected antibodies
to red cell antigens, confirmation of Rh negative status by genotyping
& Du testing, resolving ABO discrepancies, etc.
Cross matching: Routine
tests include ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody screening and identification.
Requests for routine cross match for planned transfusion are processed
with full four-test-tube cross-match including enzyme, albumin and auto-control.
Tests for cold antibodies are done when necessary, viz for patients scheduled
for open heart surgery, renal transplantation, etc.
Issue of blood and components: Blood
and blood components are verified and issued to nursing wards and operating
rooms; product modifications (irradiation etc) are performed and final
disposition of products are documented.
Blood Component
Laboratory
Blood is a precious human resource. To exercise
maximum economy in its use, every unit of blood is separated into various
components, such as packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate
and cryo-deficient plasma, etc. Buffy coat reduced red cell and platelets
are also produced. The component separation program is fully supported
by National AIDS Control Organization. The laboratory has state-of-the-art
equipment and technology. Spare plasma generated by this activity is sent
to National Plasma Fractionation Center (NPFC), Mumbai for further use.
The laboratory also supports the Peripheral Blood Stem Cell program of
the Institute by providing gamma-irradiated blood and blood products, and
help in cryo-preservation of stem cells.
Transfusion
Transmitted Infection Screening Laboratory
Provision of safe blood is of utmost priority.
Every unit of blood & component is screened for HbsAg, anti-HIV 1&2,
anti-HCV and VDRL. The laboratory is fully automated and all four infectious
markers can be screened on the day of collection.
Immunohematology
Laboratory
The department has a well-equipped laboratory
to provide diagnostic aids in the management of various autoimmune disorders
such as auto immune hemolytic anemia, paroxysmal nocturnal hematuria, cryoglobulinemia,
red cell serology of SLE etc. Besides this, the laboratory is responsible
for investigations of transfusion reactions & management of Rh-negative
antenatal case. Various investigations that are performed include, DAT,
IAT, elution, antibody screening, antibody identification & titer,
serological characterization of AIHA, Saliva screening test, Cold antibodies
etc.
Quality Control
Laboratory
To achieve objectives of supply of quality and
safe blood, strict adherence to quality control at all phases of donor
selection, screening & processing of blood & serological procedures
for grouping and typing of blood are being followed routinely. All reagents,
antisera, blood components and equipment are subjected to strict quality
checks at periodic intervals according to the standards.
