Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)
Gamma Irradiation
Donor Call Back for Hepatitis
Therapeutic
Plasma Exchange (TPE)
The department is actively collaborating with
clinical departments, in particular Neurology, Nephrology and Immunology,
for therapeutic plasma exchange in various disorders, such as Myasthenia
Gravis, Gullain Barre Syndrome, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy,
TTP, HUS etc. The procedure is performed using automatic cell separators.
Gamma Irradiation
Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease
(TA-GvHD) is a rare but highly lethal complication resulting from engraftment,
proliferation and immunologic attack of recipient tissues by transfused
donor T lymphocytes. To prevent this dreaded complication, all cellular
blood components should be gamma irradiated. In the department of
Transfusion Medicine at SGPGI, blood is irradiated using Cesium-137 in
a self-contained gamma irradiator. A dose of 2500 rad is delivered to eliminate
all lymphocytes from cellular components. Presently, the department is
irradiating all cellular components required for BMT recipients, intrauterine
transfusions, exchange transfusions in neonates, and for patients with
Hodgkin’s disease and congenital immunodeficiency syndromes.
Donor Call Back
for Hepatitis
Every unit of donated blood is screened for HBsAg
and anti-HCV by ELISA. Reactive samples are retested and those testing
positive again are considered as confirmed positive. The respective blood
donors are notified about their hepatitis tests results and are requested
to report to the Blood Center. A blood sample is withdrawn and detailed
questionnaire is filled up. The donor is then referred to the Department
of Gastroenterology at the Institute. All further testing is done free
of cost.
